Richard Kerr, retired adjunct professor of geography, will offer an introduction to how a tree grows, comparing cell growth and size. He will discuss ?early wood? in spring and what it tell us of precipitation and ?late wood? in fall and how it relates to summer temperatures.
Also covered will be the biochemistry of autumn colors and the uses of dendrochronology, which is the dating of events such as earthquakes by tree rings.
If time permits, we might demonstrate coring a tree after the presentation. Cosponsored by Evergreen Audubon and the Evergreen Nature Center.
