Description
Perhaps you have seen him, the guy in the flannel shirts, lurking around town in a black pick-up or standing behind his easel on the side of the road. Ted Garcia, a local Evergreen painter, has completed a painting every day outdoors in 2009 for a project he has titled Plein Air 365?. Be the first to view all 365 paintings at the Center for the Arts (CAE) January 8th through 23rd, 2010. The Opening Reception will be Friday, January 8th 5-8pm.
In French, en plein air literally means ?in the open air,? and it is a term used to describe a style of painting where the painter will paint outside, from real light, capturing a quickly changing scene. The painting is complete at that point and is not touched again. Garcia says, ?painting en plein air is the most rewarding thing for me. I love being outside, just me, my paint and brushes and the scene in front of me; all the while trying to capture it on canvas before it changes, what a thrill.?
Ted Garcia?s style grew out of 20 years as a freelance commercial illustration mixed with a new-found joy of discovering Russian impressionism since studying with the master painter Don Sahli. Garcia has concentrated on developing and merging the two styles to create the bold and vivid paintings for which he is known. Garcia started Plein Air 365? on December 31, 2008 and has been outside every day and even nights painting his daily scene. He scouts the area in every kind of weather, from wind blown 100+° down to snowy days of minus 10°, to find just the right location.
He has braved wind, wildlife, downpours, blizzards, police calls, and just about every condition you can imagine in a variety of outdoor locations. As 2009 comes to a close, he is compiling his paintings for the most unique exhibition of plein air work in the world, and the largest solo exhibition ever in the mountain community. Come see what was painted on your birthday or wedding anniversary! It is truly a unique opportunity to see the breadth of one artist?s portfolio from a solid 365 days of painting. We look forward to sharing his journey with you.
