PRESS RELEASE 150TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AT HIWAN HOMESTEAD MUSEUM! Contact: John Steinle 720-497-7650 jsteinle@jeffco.us On July 4, 1859, the Bergen family finished building their cabin in today?s Bergen Park, becoming the first settlers to put down roots in the Evergreen area. They chose to live along the Mount Vernon Toll Road, which connected Denver City with the gold mining camps in South Park. The toll road ran through today?s Evergreen, and met the Bradford Toll Road at Bradford Junction, now known as Conifer. Appropriately, the 150th anniversary celebrates Bergen Park, Evergreen, and Conifer. An exciting schedule of activities is planned to commemorate this important milestone! Hiwan Homestead Museum, Jefferson County Open Space and Jefferson County Historical Society are sponsoring a fun and fascinating 150th Anniversary Celebration at the Museum on July 4, from Noon to 3:00 p.m. The celebration will feature the High Line Cornet Band playing antique brass instruments, a special 150th Anniversary photo exhibit, old-time children?s games, an Anniversary quilt, a brochure showing ?then and now? photos of the surrounding area, and other activities. Humphrey Memorial Museum and Park will be bringing their original Model A Ford to add to the fun, and Lookout Mountain Nature Center staff will present a special coyote program. Visitors can also meet reenactors portraying the Bergen family and talk with them about the 1800?s in Jefferson County. This event is free to the public. Area organizations, including the Center for the Arts Evergreen, Evergreen Downtown Business Association, Evergreen Area Chamber of Commerce, Evergreen Parks and Recreation District, the Evergreen Rodeo Association, Bear Creek Cemetery Association, Conifer Historical Society, are participating in various Sesquicentennial events and programs. Hiwan Homestead Museum is a 17-room log mansion constructed in the Rustic style of architecture. It is located in Evergreen at 4208 S. Timbervale Drive and is a Jefferson County Open Space facility operated through a partnership with the Jefferson County Historical Society. The Museum was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. For more information on the 150th Anniversary celebration and the various events, please contact Hiwan Homestead Museum at 720-497-7650 or e-mail at jsteinle@jeffco.us.
