Best Custom Homes (BCH) is a new construction, remodel and renovation company based in Evergreen, Colorado. BCH is looking for a Controller to join our family where home construction is not just a job, it is a passion and a calling for the people who work with us.

We are a small-but-growing team, and this is a new position. We do bookkeeping in house and outsource much of the accounting to a firm, but we have outgrown the current structure and are looking to hire an accounting professional to build and run an in-house accounting function. This position reports to the owner.

The Controller will grow alongside BCH. We recently moved into a new building and will be expanding services to include an in-house design center and rentable shared work spaces. The Controller will play an integral role in driving the fiscal development of these new business ventures. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys doing the day to day work as well as business development and advising on the bigger picture.

Example Responsibilities:

  • Build and manage an in-house accounting function, to include A/P, A/R, GL, payroll, and benefits administration. Advise owner on all financial-related matters.

  • Forecast costs and revenues. Implement and monitor internal controls. 

  • Prepare financial reports. Identify and reconcile accounting discrepancies, budget variances, areas of financial risk, and opportunity.

  • Monitor the financial outcome of project budget vs. actual and track profit margins.

  • Oversee/process monthly construction draws for each client and reconcile balance sheets.

  • Administer and periodically audit subcontract documentation including subcontractor agreements, change orders, insurance requirements, and lien waivers.

  • Build strong relationships with subcontractors and vendors through prompt payment and facilitating an easy contract-to-payment process.

  • Proactively communicate with BCH team and clients on financial items such as monthly construction draws, balance sheets, and purchase orders impacting the budget.

  • Ensure overall compliance with policies, procedures, and accounting regulations.

  • Engage in special projects such as advising on process and policy development, marketing content development, and client tools.


  • At least eight years of general accounting experience, to include experience building accounting functions for clients/organizations.

  • Supervisory experience. While this position will not start with supervisory duties, the intention is that there will be direct reports in the near future.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with respect to sensitive information, and conduct oneself in a professional and courteous manner that demonstrates integrity, trust, care, and collaboration.

  • Resourcefulness to excel in ambiguous environments and make decisions with little direction.

  • CPA desired.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: $100 - $110k per year.

  • A flexible schedule is an option, such as 4/10 work week.

  • Remote work on agreed upon days of the week/times of the month.
